Not to mention that plenty of those U.N. taskforces probably eat a ton of bribe money into the bargain, especially since Uruguay was apparently such a huge thoroughfare for those drugs.

On the less cynical side, it's also much harder to bring someone to task for having a substance that is illegal on one side of an imaginary line, but legal on the other one. It gives a nice haven for druglords, assuming some big pharma company doesn't drive them out of business.

While this may bite a little into Cartels profits, we all know where they make most of their money and it's not Uruguay. Props to them for actually trying to do something right though.

The Uruguay federal government has announced this morning that the new Uruguain currency will be the chocolate covered Oreo cookie, which is worth about 2 slices of Totinos party pizza and half a bag of chips (any kind).

I'm doubtful that there will be much curb of the cartels. There are plenty of other substances that can be ran illegally. The only way that the cartels would be hindered is if big pharmaceuticals take over. Simple economies of scale there. But the only way that is going to happen is if every drug is legal.

    I'm confused.
How is legalized pot, production and consumption, supposed to
    curb drug trafficing?

Maybe if we legalize moonshine, production and consumption,
    it will curb drunk driving.

peoplewill do what they want no matter what the law is, so the point is whats the point of wasting money to catch them.

The theory is to drive te profit out of the black market for a particular item.

The Uruguayan government hopes legalising the sale of marijuana will tackle drug cartels
The new law will allow registered Uruguayans over 18 to buy up to 40g (1.4oz) of the drug a month.
The government hopes it will help tackle drug cartels.

Okay, I've read the BBC page several times and am still confused.

How will promoting the use of marijuana affect drug cartels negatively?
What makes 40 grams the magic number?

Nothing in the article explains how this is supposed to work, and
I am to dumb to see any way it will have a negative affect on the drug trafficking cartels.

Ok... The drug cartel sells drug (X) for $50. When drug (X) is legalized and available at the local store, it will cost $20. Result: no more business for the cartel. Less money for weapons, planes and fancy submarines.

Cartels will just move to another business. There was an interesting story (I forgot where I saw it) the other day about how Mexican cartels are expanding their business lines into mining for extra cash.
