Rand Paul says he's not a Libertarian.
He's kinda not. And he has flaws. But regardless, I'd vote for him.

Some non-Libertarians are more libertarian than most Libertarians...Rand Paul says he's not a Libertarian.
Could it be that when a libertarian runs for political office, under whatever Party header, they might just be willing to fill a spot normally reserved to those who think they should rule others?
How could they possibly convince America that they'd rule better than the others when they have no underlying desire or intention to rule at all?
Hmm...
Could be. Would they be honest enough to say so if that's the case? Any examples?
How could they? Any examples?
I would think so too. But unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a coherent philosophy within the ranks of the LP. Being a regular reader of Reason's FB feed, their readers are all over the place. You have hard core socialists that think they are libertarian because they are pro gay and pro dope. Then you have conservatives that are anti gay and anti dope but think they are libertarian because they believe in shrinking government.I think the best way to advance Libertarian ideas is by being a needed voting block whose ideas need to be accommodated in legislation

ETA: I felt I should clarify that I consider myself a conservative with some libertarian leanings. I am not holding myself out as a sufficiently pure libertarian a la MrJ.
Johnson has the better idea, he's just not the right man to carry it forward. Libertarians should run as such at the statewide level and form a caucus in congress should enough be elected.
This explains the Johnson/Weld campaign efforts to be the alternate home to Bernie's supporters. Problem is, the Bernie supporters want free stuff and the larger government required to coerce it.
If only there was a libertarian party that was more in the mold of people like Austen Peterson rather than Johnson/Weld. What a laughing stock.
Peterson is probably closer to your views, which is to say Republican. He put quite the emphasis on being pro-life. Libertarians vary greatly in their abortion views but using a pro-life stance is a Republican view. For example, Ron Paul doesn't favor abortion but he also doesn't think that outlawing it ever helped anything.
