Don't make money off of Google products without paying the protection fee. For that matter you can substitute any large company in for "Google".Don't get in the way of Google making money.
Oh yeah. Like roll your own DVRs. There was a product called SageTV. It was awesome. Install multiple tuner cards and you could record and watch as many OTA and digital cable streams (if your cable provider played nice) as you had tuners. They even had a Hydra they were selling to media companies that would record up to 12 programs at once!Don't make money off of Google products without paying the protection fee. I'm sure an alternative will fill the void in time. While the Googles and Facebooks can litigate away mature projects, they can't stop new one from popping up.
About damn time. I need a new battery for my iphone and its going to cost me $80. Either I buy the battery and pay somebody to crack it open, or go to the apple store and trade it in for an identical new one. That swap is Apple's way of replacing the battery without actually cracking it open while you wait. They charge you the fee to replace the battery, but give you a whole new phone instead. It's official: Smartphones will need to have replaceable batteries by 2027

We'll see if they come up with a model that is only European, but I don't generally think that's how that goes, but it is possible at this point. It only applies to Europe, not the USA.
"This week, the European Council officially agreed to the new regulation. Now, the only step left is for the European Council and Parliament to sign on the dotted line. Once they do, the clock starts ticking: any manufacturer wanting to sell phones in the EU must ensure those phones have replaceable batteries by 2027."

Apple just caved. They tried doing a euro only model with USB-C when that mandate was passed. That lasted one model. They announced recently that starting with iphone 15, ALL will use USB-C. They tried making 2 and threw in the towel. We'll see if they come up with a model that is only European, but I don't generally think that's how that goes, but it is possible at this point.
I was quoted that price for my 12 mini. But the last time I tried to get a new battery they just swapped phones because it was easier.I just replaced the battery in my iPhone XR at an Apple Store for ~$90.
