Non-technical term, the ability to knock down an attacker or slow his forward progress.

No "dumb" small arms projectile, or shotgun round (even a 10 ga. slug or #000 buck) will "knock down" an attacker. That's the stuff of Hollywood and their fantasy laden Movie Physics. A one ounce slug or a .50 BMG (Ma Deuce machine gun round) does not have sufficient momentum to hardly move a 110 pound adult. When sufficient blood pressure drops or neural activity ceases, they simply drop in place. You'd have to hit an attacker with a substantial explosive concussion to move them. It's not the shrapnel, it's the concussion from the explosion. It's not until you get into grenades, mortar rounds or bigger that the blast concussion can start to physically knock an adult down.

Guns have gotten lighter for sure. 10 oz locked breech LCP vs an all metal 23oz blow back action PPK. The materials that the gun is made of does not affect cartridge performance. Other then barrel length. Longer Pistol barrels result in higher velocity. The advantage of smaller lighter guns is they are easy to carry. That is it, that is what they offer, justify whatever else.....

There has always been a debate between light and fast vs slow and heavy. IMO a lot of this new ammo is trendy at best. BBI and NIFT summed all this up nicely. .380 is marginal because you can either have penetration or expansion but not both. There is only so much a person can expect out of a relatively low pressure cartridge fired from a short barrel.

edit: should have quoted the new guy here. No I don't think new materials has improved the .380.

Doesn't exist. The only way to slow them down is to kill or cripple them. A bullet that will break a femur is much better than one that stops at the femur, for example.

All the flutes, phillips heads, petals that come off and go their own way, etc. are junk. Quality bonded HP ammo, generally in heavy-for-caliber offerings, consistently offer the best performance in the common duty cartridges (9mm, .40, .45).
