display of forward facing red/blue lights in a non-police vehicle is not legal.
Per state law, to enforce traffic law a LEO must EITHER be in a fully marked police vehicle OR in full agency uniform. If someone you believe to be a poser lights you up, call 911 and ask for the real cops. If you decide to talk to the supposed poser, ask for ID and for a supervisor. Real cops will have ID and must call for a supervisor if you request one. If you are in fear of your life/safety from the poser (fear other than the fact that they are a poser) GTFO and proceed to a public, well-lit area or police/fire station.
    I'll just call you, okay?

Didn't they arrest a guy in Indy some time ago who had a car with lights, gun, radio scanners and a full IMPD uniform during the funerals of a fallen IMPD officers?

    That's kinda scary.Unless you're a LEO in the same department you wouldn't know he's a fake cop.
Yet alone if you're not a cop at all.
Good thing this guy just took pictures.
He could have been arresting people or even worse been involved in an active shooter incident with no way to tell he's not a real cop.
I imagine during incidents like that other officers dont look closely at other officer's badges.

I had someone today come up along side of me today on 465 on the west side. Guess he was sick of being held up in the traffic because of the over sized load that was taking up 2 lanes. I was in the far right hand lane, he came up next to me for .25 mile or so and was giving me all sorts of hand gestures like I could do something about the semi and the 4 state troopers escorting the semi.

I just shook my head and kept going on my way.

I don't know every officer on my department by face or name. Police impersonators are actually pretty rare. If I am in uniform I will challenge anyone not in uniform that is acting like a cop to attempt to determine if they are legit.

Real cops don't put DARE plates on their car.

Dare plate is red flag for wanna-be cop. No police car will EVER have one. They buy "cop looking" cars and put on a DARE plate to make it look "official".

I was meeting with a fellow ingo'er and we both noticed a "cop" sitting off in the distance in the lot. He had more antennas and lights on his car than you could find room for. I decided to drive by him I the way out and check it out. I've got nothing to hide or worry about, I was just currious. The windows were tinted but I could still see that the back seat was piled full of stuff and he looked old with a beard (still could have been Five'0), and then there it was ..... The dare plate! I was laughing so damn hard. No cop

I guess even if the guy is in full uniform (very accurate with all the proper gear) you could still spot if he's a fake by the way he acts, talks, usues radio codes etc ... unless he went to the academy and knows all the SOPs of your department, right?

You can sometimes spot actual cops not in uniform by the way they act (how they stand, how they scan the room etc) so I guess a cop can spot another cop pretty easily. :dunno:

Pretty much, but there are exceptions.

Real cops don't put DARE plates on their car.

The license plate only said Dare with no numbers or anything else. It was a Red Impala with blacked out windows. Red car with black windows is the Dare color scheme. It was the Red letter Dare logo only and not a legal license plate. I assumed he was the Dare officer. The windows were also Limo Black which is not legal except for LEO. I have seen plenty of wanna be police cars and this wasn't one of them. This was also about eight years ago when Dare was going strong.

Police vehicles are required to have a license plate in Indiana. As for the tinted windows I didn't know there was an exemption for LE.

Per state law, to enforce traffic law a LEO must EITHER be in a fully marked police vehicle OR in full agency uniform.

Just to clarify, this does NOT mean that someone in an unmarked and not in uniform can't pull you over. It means they can't enforce traffic laws. If I pull you over because you are a suspect in a robbery or you have a warrant, I'm not enforcing traffic laws, and I can still pull you over legally and take enforcement action.

The windows were also Limo Black which is not legal except for LEO.

There's no exception for law enforcement in the IC codes for window tint. The only exception I recall is for medical conditions.

Oh my gosh..... Now I'm not sure who I followed from Terre Haute to Indy. We were trying to beat a storm and get home on Mothers Day on the Motorcycles. One guy has a CDL and could have lost it. I think we were all crazy for doing 95 mph across I-70. The other two guys lived in Decatur so we split at the 465 Bypass. I went north on 421 and it started misting rain. I met a Trooper on 421 doing 70 and he must have felt sorry for me because he never turned around. This was eight years ago and I have come to the conclusion that I would rather be soaking wet with rain instead of a smear on the road.

Makes me wonder how far admitting a speeding violation in a forum full of LEOs can go... :P

If I were to guess, it was a car show car that was likely sponsored by DARE. It may or may not have been an LEO driving it, but it's probably a display piece and not a working LEO vehicle. (Working in the sense of being used for police work day to day, not in that it is a functional car.)

Im an open book brother, Iv'e got nothing to hide anymore. My younger days were filled with speeding, drugs and alcohol. I have been forgiven and changed by my Heavenly Father. I have nothing to hide from anyone. It sure is a nice feeling not to worry when the Popo is behind me. I took my 4 yr old Grandson to the Elkhart police station with me while I was there getting an out of state vehicle inspected. I asked if they had a uniform officer that could talk to him because he was afraid of LEO. A super nice officer came out and squatted down and talked to my grandson. He talked to him about strangers, being lost in Walmart and other things. He gave him a coloring book and the officer asked if he was till afraid and my Grandson said no. I have great respect for all LEO unless they disrespect me or my family. I even Respect Frank even as mean as he is. :):
