There's a significant Iranian diaspora in Canada just as there are pockets of them in the US that fled from the regime. Most are not sought after as Warsaw Pact and Soviet defectors were making it impossible to set foot in the country. They have extended family there. In addition, there are Iranian students in Canada. Their typical travel was via Ukrainian Int'l Airlines to Kiev, and then to Canada. There are no flights from Canada to Iran (DOH!). There are also about 12,000 Iranian students in the US on F1 visas (non-resident student).A lot of them are probably dual-citizens (Iranian and Canadian).
While a significant portion of the population supports the current regime, and it has a very powerful grip on its military with its support, the enormous portion of the population - its educated and literate in particular - that detest the regime and make as best they can in living there.
