    Freedom , yes really Freedom
mods feel free to move if need be ....

My 4-H group in Owen County : The 4-H fishing Team , has decided to get the Vietnam Traveling wall to come to Spencer, IN . I am a Co-leader of the group with my mother and a few others.

For those who do not know , the Vietnam traveling wall is a 1/2 size replica of the original memorial. There are to date 58,282 names on the wall. The dates in Spencer are August 8-12 (opening at 6pm on 8/8-----closes at noon at 8/12), if will be lit and staffed 24hrs a day while here for visitors. We will not be selling anything at the wall but i am in the process of creating t-shirts between now and then and will update this post when i have some ready for those interested . The kids are very proud to be doing this and we are getting alot of help from area businesses and people. We have arranged for an opening and closing ceremony.

forgot to mention will be at the Owen County Fair Grounds

There is astronomical cost to bring the wall here at the tune of $6000. Its right around $4500 to bring it and additional $1500 for the gentlemen and women traveling with and moving the wall as well as their lodging/food/ building materials for the base of the wall (and additional $2500 for the Huey Helicopter).

I am incredibly proud of my Fishing kids for making this happen, they even said they would use their camp money they have earned cleaning yards/mowing grass/working booths etc to help pay for it if we can't get all the money together.

I am not asking for hand-outs, but more a word out for those who would like to see it, of course assistance (financial/time) will be greatly appreciated

    update :
on opening day , we are planning on having a Huey Helicopter fly in to the fairgrounds towards the beginning of the opening day (8/8 ~5pm) ................ also a very kind gentleman is bringing a half-track and Vietnam jeep on 8/10 for children to see and touch etc ............

everything is coming along amazingly hope to see lots of INGO there

It was here in Clark Co,last yr. For the 'escort route'......they want'd 1000 bikes and the count went well over 1500. Was 'round 35 +/- miles. Start'd at S&S in Clarksville, went thru Jeffersonville to Charlestown, then to Sellersburg, then to New Albany, and finally back to Clarksville at Veterans Pkwy.
Usually don' do the 'group ride' thing but.......did do this 1,an' was a great ride/experience......people on foot, and cagers lined the sides of the route, and all'a FD's (x'cept for Jeff,dumazz's......) gated they towns route with the ladder trucks x'tend'd over with the Flag....:rockwoot: :patriot:

A great ride/x'perience......hope to do the 'Run for The Wall' at some point in time.......:patriot:

I saw it at Whitewater Memorial State Park, near Liberty, three or four years ago. The backdrop was the beach, lake and a beautiful blue sky with a setting sun. It was impressive. Some of the other displays are also good. They had the last letters that some of the local GIs mailed home before they were killed on display. It will bring a tear to your eye!

By all means, go see it if you are in the area.

Sadly, some of the names on the wall are of people who died in traffic accidents and other non-combat related incidents. I knew of a guy who was being taken to the 90th Replacement at Long Binh to process out and the Jeep he was riding in flipped and he was killed. In another incident three MPs from the 79th MPs were crossing a small river, all decked out in heavy gear, to set up an after-dark ambush and the boat capsized and they all drowned.

They are all heros but too bad they had to go that way.

I've seen that in Lafayette. Been to the one in D.C. It is very sobering.

On that note, if ever in the D.C. area visit them all if you can. The WWII memorial is amazing. Korea memorial is very well down and I hear looks amazing at night.
