Is it time to require all chemicals to be hauled in double wall containers on rail and road like we do for crude oil on the ocean? When you can’t regulate yourself correctly to provide safety to the communities you pass through, then it’s time for those communities to take corrective action that is painful and costly to your way of doing business. Fines that threaten the ability of your business to continue is a great motivator of compliance.

I guess the real question is that the “controlled” burn was the only possible action that would prevent an explosion?
Hanging around fire fighters regularly, I'd say its probably the lowest risk to people and property in the immediate vicinity. There was no guarantee they could keep all of those tanks cool enough. And if they were tried and were wrong, we'd be talking about the loss of brave men and women.

Those videos you posted were pretty enlightening. We are talking about some HUGE explosions.

Yes as the rest he is a liar, says he has these type of problems here and fixed. He can’t even fix a pot hole. Another payed want a be.
You are correct, most of the roads in southbend were and still are terrible. I only go to that place because my oldest daughter lives there. I try to dodge potholes. Indot isn't any better. Everthing by them or who gets contracts for resurfacing the roads do a halfassed job.

Wouldn’t a controlled burn be having control over the amount of fuel and oxygen to the fire? They just lit it on fire. Had some firefighters around and called it a controlled burn.

Considering the alternative is probably like in post 322, what they did WAS controlled. (relatively speaking)

It's always going to be tough to look at those pictures of the black mushroom cloud and think it was the right choice, but the guys making the decision only know what could happen and not what would happen.

Some materials when they react together, and vinyl chloride is one of them generate heat, and the heat makes the reaction go even faster. When you work with fiberglass and epoxy you mix small amounts of epoxy as with a larger surface area to volume ratio the heat radiates away, mix too much and you end up with a burned hand that was holding the epoxy can. The vinyl chloride in the hot tank car was reacting and the hotter it got the faster it goes, a quart can of epoxy can go from room temperature to searing red hot it a few seconds. The railroad's HAZMAT guys probably knew they could be hours, minutes, or seconds from an exothermic reaction. It was cold outside and the vinyl chloride was cold as well. They gambled that they could unload and burn it instead of just evacuating everybody.

Yeah, its kinda like the end of Old Yeller. What you have to do seems like its awful. But you have to look at the alternative of NOT doing it.

What's the problem? It's not nuclear reactor fuel and it's not getting dumped on the ground. What do you do with contaminated soil or firefighting water but ship it to the kind of facility that can clean and dispose of it?

Politics involved at this point, companies in the hazwaste business in those states have a program to clean up the water by airstripping, the soil is more complex.
