    The size of the HP slide is necessary, since the gun is blowback operated and relies solely on slide mass to keep the action closed during peak pressure. If you're going to make the slide shorter in height, you'd either have to make it longer, or find some other way to maintain the weight.

    Jus' sayin'...
    Yup. They use mostly a zinc alloy in the casing of the slide for low cost and simplicity of manufacture. If they were to change this recipe to maintain slide mass while reducing the over all size, they would have to use a more expensive process or materials (or both) which would defeat the purpose of their design - that being a very low cost alternative to what's already on the market.

    If you don't like the appearance of Hi-Point pistols, the simple solution is to buy something else. :D
