TED attempting to purge TEDx video titled "Pedophilia is a natural sexual orientation" from the Internet

That woman talks like voiceover on those starving children commercials.

It seems like for every one good TEDx talk, there's 20 that are awful.


Actually, she makes some decent points about a very touchy subject. You can't just tell a Pedophile, "Don't be Pedo!", the same way you can't say, "Don't be gay!". The attraction is always there, so let's focus on helping the person subdue the urges and avoid any action. We've got to the point where we've accepted homosexual attraction as "natural", yet many of us still define acting it out as immoral. It probably ought to be time where pedophilia is the same. In other words, her talk isn't as terrible as you think it is.

Everything I've been told in the past 15 years leads me to believe sexual desires are innate and cannot be changed, so not living it out would appear to be the only option that results in kids not being harmed.

Personally, I'd rather hang out with a pedophile that's got it under control, than a Bronie that acts out.

Uh, if you're saying that "natural" means innate, I'll agree with that.

But I'd not classify the attraction as "OK" in terms of becoming as socially acceptable as gayness has become. What two consenting adults who are sexually attracted to each other do behind closed doors is their own business, regardless of how disgusting that might be to other people. It's none of their business.

However, this kind of attraction is dangerous, and so requires some level of social weariness. It's not just up to pedophiles to not act on it, it's necessary for society also to be cautious. Of course society doesn't have to treat them as anathema as long as they're not acting on it. Treating them in a way that doesn't force them to hide it has a lot of utility too. So I think there's a balance to be struck; if any acceptance at all, it must be accompanied by appropriate societal caution.

Innate - yes.

Also, in my worldview homosexual acts aren't acceptable, nor is any sex outside of marriage. I am willing to say that those are not nearly as damaging as pedophilia acts - which is the only one that's illegal, and I'm fine with that.
