    This all got me curious:

    Currently rocking a MS Surface Pro @ 1.9/2.5 GHz i5 4300U

    work laptop is 2.6/2.71 GHz i5 7300U

I don't even know if that is fast or slow any more. Seems to do what I need well enough. Though, I could use more storage.

If your MBP is i9, I'll give you $1000 for the useless thing
My work MBP is 5 years old. I don’t want to “upgrade” to the newer ones. I’ll stick with the one I have for as long as I can get away with. I don’t care for the usb-c ports, and only a couple of them. I like the magsafe power port. I wish my mbp had an ethernet port, but Apple decided long ago that I don’t need one. Other than that, I’m still happy with it.

I got off the bleeding edge/better=faster=newer ferris wheel a long time ago.

Proven technology and "fast enough" are what I buy, which isn't very often nowadays. :)

(Although, internet reliability and pipe have gotten significantly more important in the last year or so.)

your surface is a 4th gen processor, the work laptop is a 7th. Intel's currently available processors are 8th gen. Clock for clock, a newer generation will be faster that previous.

That said, CPUs (unless you're going bargain basement or ultra low power consumption) got powerful enough years ago that they were no longer the biggest bottleneck in a system's performance. The single biggest bottleneck is spinning hard disks. Your surface uses an SSD and likely your work laptop as well. Replacing the spining disk in an older computer of any type will yield a significant pertinence boost.

Thunderbolt 2 to Ethernet adapter and your problems are solved/just beginning

Damn I really need to upgrade. Makes me feel like mine is ancient history

If it still does what you need, it ain't broke

You have only to wait, sooner or later the provider of your OS will do something that forces a hardware upgrade

MicroRipoff used to be clearly ahead on the churn, but lately OS has been coming up fast in the outside lane

i7 and i9 have both have a max TDP of 45 W. I was only pointing out that laptops can dissipate that much heat if properly designed.

Just so. And unfortunately Apple has succumbed to the whole "turbo boost" thing, and while its not in my wheelhouse I bet overclocking worsens the waste heat problem in a non-linear way

I get by. When I'm in the office I use a USB hub. I have two monitors, so the Thunderbolt ports are used. There are only two USB 3.0 ports, so if I didn't use the hub, I'd use up one for the keyboard (I don't like the ***** ass little wireless one Apple offers), and one left for the Ethernet adapter. I don't mind that setup, but I'd really rather have a dedicated Ethernet adapter.

Really though, I wish Apple would make the 17" MBP again with updated hardware. That thing was big and heavy, but a freaking tank. Loved the larger screen. Didn't mind the weight. For a work/developer laptop, who cares about small/skinny? The only portability I need is the ability to take the thing to and from the office.

Here's the thing. Most non .NET developers I know use a Mac, so you'd think Apple would make a model for us. Nope. They wanna pretend they're stark industries. Well, if they want to keep the developer market they need to shape up. With Windows 10 having the new linux command line, I've seen more developers switch to Windows because Apple keeps producing retarded non-productive gimmicks like that ghey ass touch bar. Oh. And don't get me started on that spastic new keyboard. My son likes his though, but then he also likes the Cubs, so...

It does what I need for now, but it won’t keep up much longer. The new games coming out takes all it has, and games like arma is cpu heavy so I gotta turn everything way down. And like I said above, I wanna give the VR stuff a while longer to work out the kinks then build a new machine for that.

If you're going to build one, it would probably be good to wait for the inevitable death spiral among 98% of the miners so high end graphics cards will be less stupidly expensive

Ya that’s why I haven’t built a new one yet. And every time I start shopping around they release the “next best thing” that ends up being marketing bs, so I’m wanting to wait til it peaks out like it tends to do every so often then find what the best bang for my buck is. Or I might get a case of the **** it’s and just buy one already VR ready :):

I got an amd athlon x4, nowhere near the Intel stuff that’s out now. Seeing the VR stuff has me wanting to build a new one in the next year or so

And that relic runs GTA V?

Actually ya. And I don’t have to turn settings all the way down. But I usually play it on Xbox, only have 1 buddy that plays pc so kinda boring alone.

You know, it probably plays GTA V better than GTA IV, which was horribly coded and relied too much on CPU horsepower.

Lol, told you it made me feel mine is ancient :):

GTA IV didn’t run well on consoles, never bothered to try it on pc. Hell it would freeze my Xbox half the time, so I never finished playing it. Only GTA I haven’t beat... well, besides the birds eye view original PlayStation versions.

Wonder if GTA is looking to get into VR on the next release... or even a version of GTA V that could do it... Eh, the engine doesn't seem right for VR...

Imagine the outrage, though... "GAME LITERALLY TRAINING KIDS TO BE KILLERS"

Would be a neat world to walk around in, just chill and people-watch.

My 970 has been handling all the VR I've given it, so far. Waiting on the 11-series to come out so I might be able to find an affordable 1080 or something.
