I'd unplug the fuse for the gauge just to see how long she could take it.My MIL is an infamous back seat driver. While her skills run the gamut, her particular specialty is peering over your arm to check your gas gauge. Then admonishing you for letting it get too low, all the while you have 3/8 of a tank. For godsakes, NEVER let it get to 1/8th, you'll never hear the end of it.
So wouldn't it have been fun to have her in the truck going down I-75 in central GA last spring with this ---

Many vehicles have one fuse for the whole instrument cluster so you might lose more than just the fuel gauge by pulling the fuse. Which might be even better.
