    Which gives me an excuse to derail the thread:

    Back when the Russians were the Soviets, there was the occasional defector who wrote a book once he got to the capitalist west. One of them wrote of his experiences in SpetzNaz training.

    It apparently was the custom during basic training to initially issue demilled rifles to conscripts, the rifle having a barrel full of lead, a hole drilled in the chamber, and “for training use only“ stamped on it.

    Soviet training in general could be quite brutal, and there were a lot of “pranks“ involved.

    He remembered all this when he reported for his Spetznaz training, so when he was issued his gear, he carefully inspected all of it including his mess kit. Sure enough, the bowl of his spoon had a hole drilled in it, and the handle was stamped “for training use only.”
