The Army asked Colt to make some changes when they first looked at the gun, they wanted to be able to tell when it was out of ammo. The result was the humble slide stop. The cavalry wanted a lanyard as always so the 1902 goes from "sporting "configuration, to military configuration that you see here. Really early variations of this gun have the slide serrations in front of the trigger guard. Everything about this project gets shelved after Thompson-LaGarde and they submit the 1905. An upgraded 45 caliber version.
