So now we as parents cant control what our own children eat for lunch.

Which came first, single parent households or subsidized day care? I think single parent homes are a lot more complex, and have many more roots in our modern culture, than a simple "the gov't subsidized it". Of course, I came from a zero parent household well before preschool was a thing, so what do I know.
One should question the reason we have had an increase in single parent households "necessitating" subsidized daycare in the first place.

It's funny how "stupid games, stupid prizes" never seems to apply to parenting choices.

There's a stunning correlation between getting married first, and then having kids and NOT living in poverty.

.....but every lifestyle choice is equally valid, right?

My wife and I tried to do things the right way. Got a house that is big enough for kids. Well within our means. Steady jobs. Now find out we can't have kids. OT but still frustrating seeing people who are clearly living on .gov and we could provide well for a child, yet can't have one.

Kudos on trying to do things the smart way. I can only say that you could possibly provide the means to get a child out of a situation more likely to lead a child down a bad path, and get them onto a good path.

Now that the gov. controls our health care they will want to control what we all eat, but the elites can eat any thing they want because they are smarter than us.

While this is outrageous and I think also a bit of a governmental overstep, the easy way to deal with this is to simply ask the doctor to write them the needed note and make lunch as usual.

I'm sorry, but I would be at the office the first thing in the morning and advise them that this is MY child, not theirs. And if they have a problem with what I feed MY child, then we can take this to the next level. I am very sorry to hear this. Put up a good fight, contact and attorney, and set an example. I wish this would happen to me...I'd be glad to be boisterous!

I understand what you're saying, I really do. And the emotion connected with it is certainly understandable. I only offer this to show the other side, where "they" are coming from and why things legally aren't as much of a governmental overreach when viewed from their side as ours.

    Parker vs. Hurley

This decision has been precedent for American education ever since. It was a FANTASTIC decision for we who homeschool and those who want to private school their children (hence the earlier posted admonitions). It has created a nightmare of a road for those whose kids attend public school to travel.

Actually, the quality of the food in the Federal program has increased dramatically in the past few years. We serve fresh veggies and fruit, and only French fries are fried. We don't fry anything else. Also, all the chips are baked. The broccoli is some of the best I've had. The quality of the carrots, green beans, and other veggies is as good or better than what I buy at Kroger, and our cooks cook it right, in a VERY clean kitchen, that is randomly inspected, twice a year. I still can't tell much about what is in the chicken nuggets, but you can't tell much about that anywhere, in a store or restaurant, anyway, and again, at least ours are baked. Also, a high percentage of our food we serve is NOT processed. Much of it is made right in our kitchen, from natural foods and ingredients, by real people that know how to cook.

Generally, the federal programs give you some of the food, but they also give you a budget, so it is up to the school food service staff to decide how to spend it. Some do it well, while others buy crap. This is yet another reason to get involved in your child's education. Don't think private schools are so great, either. Many of them get their food.....you guessed it.....from the local public school! You should see some of the crap my kids' preschool feeds them. MUCH worse than what my school feeds kids. Much worse. For starters, they frequently eat peanut butter made with partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. That's slow death in a jar! Bacteria won't even eat that peanut-flavored Crisco!

Bottom line: Don't assume your school's lunches are bad. Go and check it out. I'd feed what we're serving to my kids in a heartbeat. In fact, I will be. My oldest will be attending my school next year.

Unfortunately, I can't speak for other schools, public or private. All I know is what we do and serve, and our kids seem to like it. It also beats the hell out of what most of them are eating at home, anyway. Much of our society has no clue how to eat anything at home other than processed food.

I'm sure many homeschoolers experience the joy of hot pockets and Totinos pizzas, too!

I don't care if school food has gotten better now, of if it's better than what the parents have provided. If the parents wish to provide a meal, then that is THEIR (the parents) decision, and no one else.

While this is outrageous and I think also a bit of a governmental overstep, the easy way to deal with this is to simply ask the doctor to write them the needed note and make lunch as usual.

What is easy, is not always right.
The burden of proof must be on the government to prove the parents to be causing so much harm to their own children.

Has anyone raised the point as to why tax money should be used to feed kids whose parents are WILLING AND ABLE to feed them?

And now that the government controls our health care? Practicality is wise up to a point. But going along to get along sometimes means we end up in a place we never wanted to be because we didn't stop and pay attention to where we were going in the first place. This is one of those things.

Wow. Tell them to go pound sand and do it anyway. What are they gonna do, not let your kid eat?
Well, if a child's school actually had a rule like that they could seize the lunch, give the kid a school lunch and bill the parents. Treat them like a kid who forgets their lunch or has no money in their lunch account.

That is a bunch of crap! It doesn't surprise me though that they want to control what your kids eat they want to control all other aspects of raising your kids.
