Didn't have a choice on which one to buy. I bought the only one that they had.
To be honest, it is really starting to grow on me. I want to carry it and keep it for awhile. I may not worry about the safety. It is a bit stiff and unlikely to be engaged unintentionally. I like it enough that I am trying to part ways with my current carry gun.
I have drinkin the koolaid, and it is good!

Anyone ever used Smith & Wesson to refinish one of their 3rd gens? I see they still offer it on their website, I'm curious about picking up a used 5904 or something of the like and having S&W refinish it.

Now you need to find that elusive 3906. Looks clean to me.

I really wouldn't send it in as majority of the old guys have retired and these young kids have played with plastic. As far as the stainless steel finish's go you could bead blast or use scotch brite pads.

RustyHornet has indicated on the following thread that he can bead blast. I was thinking about PM'ing him and asking if that is a service he provides. I don't know him but he is in our area of the state.

If you do contact him, let us know the outcome.

I was just curious. I wouldn't send a stainless gun into S&W for sure, it's too easy to find someone to do it, or even do it yourself. I was thinking about picking up a real beater trade in 5904 (one of the black guns) and seeing what S&W would do to it.

I ended up picking up an original Model 59 today. While its not a 3rd gen gun, it's still a nice little piece, especially for what they're running these days. Plus magazine compatibility isn't a bad thing with the 59xx as well.

    Uhhh..... wow. What a find.
Although I don't currently have a 3rd Gen. Smith, they hold a special place in my heart. My first one was a 5906 back in the early 1990's, since then I have had a 5904, 3913, 4516, another 5906, and a 908S. The 4506-1 like yours is one of my Grail Guns, as is another 3913.
    Congrats!

I would say more like 850 for one with 2 mags no box and in shooter grade to 1000+ for original box and goodies and in 90% or better.

    I would agree with that.
You also have to factor in which model. Some had low production numbers and some extremely low.

I have a model 1066 and even if i was trying to
Sell it , I would keep it if I couldn't get at least $1,000

I picked up a 1076 and a 1086, original boxes, basically unfired (from description, and the pictures look it), and 10 total magazines, for a little under $800 each, plus tax and buyers premium. Can't wait to see how they actually are.

Believe it or not, the magazines were in a lot of 3 (for 65 bucks) and a lot of 2 (for 30 bucks). I know they go for crazy money, so for those, in factory packaging, I feel like I stole them.

Yes you did. Someone didn't know what they had. Magazines can go as high as $100 each.

It was an estate auction, sent to me by a friend from when I lived in Kansas City. Needless to say, I didn't spread it around too much. They also had a 1006, 1026, 1066 and another 1076. I was shocked to see that many in one auction.

Your 1086 is the second lowest produced. I'm sure it's worth a pretty penny !

    Model Total Produced
    1006 26,978
    1026 3,135
    1046 151
    1066 5,067
    1076 13,805
    1086 1,660

All I know is that I would give you your money back for either. :-)

I bought a 1006 a while back in mint condition with three mags/box/papers/original receipt and had, as I recall, in the high $800's to my door. I try to forget what I pay so when my wife asks I can truthfully answer...I was pretty happy with that price.

That's why I went ahead and bought them both, when I really couldn't afford it. Not to mention, everyone missed the lots of magazines, the guns were listed at 10mm, the magazines as 10 m m. So a search for one didn't bring up the other.

Another 1076 sold for less than the one I picked up, at $530 (sans box and has a bit more wear), 1066 sold for $650, 1026 for $800 and a straight 1006 for $650. Needless to say, the auction was not well advertised online, as I feel like every gun went for less than it would have on gunbroker. I can't wait to get them, but my gut says shipping is going to take forever. Rest assured, as soon as I have them, there will be pictures.

I'm a DAO type guy, as I carry a 3953TSW quite often, and occasionally carry my 6946. Or a hammerless revolver, so the 1086 was really where I was focused on this auction, knowing how rare they are.

Oh, those prices hurt when I think of all of 10XX guns I passed over years ago that were all under $400. No one wanted them back then.

Heck, as little as 3 years ago you could get a Chinese T53 Mosin carbine and a tin of ammo, out the door for $200. Now good luck even finding surplus x54R. But yeah, it's always a gamble to see what is going to increase in value and what isn't
