I think secular democracy is in the process of being coup'ed right now. Hello Islamic state.

That's the somewhat ironic thing. Erdogan claims to be fighting terrorism. And, since many indicators point to a closer relationship with Russia, it is unlikely that Putin would accept a Daesh-dominated Turkey. He already has that in Chechnya and Dagestan.

Turkey coup bid: Erdogan says US general 'taking side of plotters' - BBC News

Gen Votel had said on Thursday: "We have certainly had relationships with a lot of Turkish leaders - military leaders in particular. I am concerned about what the impact is on those relationships as we continue."
On Friday, President Erdogan condemned the comments, saying: "It's not up to you to make that decision. Who are you? Know your place! You are taking the side of coup plotters instead of thanking this state for defeating the coup attempt."
He added: "They [the critics] say, 'We worry for [Turkey's] future'. But what are these gentlemen worried about? Whether the numbers of detained and arrested will increase? If they are guilty, they will increase.

    So there's that.

How much you wanna bet the US pulled the plug on their dictator-puppet Erdogan after he decided he didn't want strings and be crushed by Putin?

Several threads to possibly post this in.

Turkey's President Erdogan in St Petersburg to 'reset' Russia ties - BBC News

Mr Erdogan thanked Mr Putin, saying "your call straight after the coup attempt was very welcome".
    ...
Then, after the 15 July coup attempt in Turkey, Mr Putin expressed support for Mr Erdogan. He did not criticise Mr Erdogan's crackdown on political opponents and purge of alleged "plotters" in state institutions.

In a fit of Brit humor, this morning the article was originally titled "Erdogan seeks to 'reset' ties with Russia" in a dig at HRC. :)

    Could be anywhere
So, as of yesterday Erdogan has closed 4,262 companies and institutions who were not politically favorable to him. He has arrested 40,029 people and turned loose over 38k current occupants of jails to make room for them. 18 Aug dawn saw raids of some 200 homes by a 'financial crimes' unit. He has dismissed 79,900 military, police and civil personnel. They are having their own Krystal Nacht.

Turkey has universal gun registration, they track ammo sales, you are not allowed to own a gun unless you prove a (government approved) need for it and it must be done every 5 years. If you have a gun they know who you are and where you live, they know your political affiliations.

Erdogan is successfully moving to make Turkey another 3rd world islamic hell hole based on tribalism and terror.

And he can feel free to do this because the subjects have no means of effective protest. The military was their constitutional fallback under the order created by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk after WWI to restrain zealots and retain the republic. Now that Erdogan is removing that block to perpetual theocratic power the little people will be made to care.

It is a lesson...one learned many times in history that the left keeps wanting to teach us again right here.

Anything is possible with this administration. Including caving in to despots. In fact, after a few times, it becomes a pattern.
