George Washington was not our first president. John Hanson was our first president. George Washington was the eighth U.S. President, taking office in 1789.

    The first eight presidents are:
    John Hanson (1776-82)
    Elias Boudinot (1782-83)
    Thomas Mifflin (1783-84)
    Richard Henry Lee (1784-85)
    John Hancock (1785-86)
    Nathan Gorman (1786-87)
    Arthur St. Clair (1787-88)
    Cyrus Griffin (1788-89)

People say this, but there was no “President of the United States” until the office of “President of the United States” was created in the Constitution. President of the Continental Congress? Not the same thing...at all. Hard to have a chief executive until you create an Executive Branch.

Just to be clear... George Washington was the first president of the United States, but Hanson and the others were presidents of the Continental Congress which was made up of representatives of the colonies.
