Does anyone have a preference on a long bow to purchase. I don't even know if anybody uses these anymore besides Byron Furgeson. Probably will purchase one at Bass Pro or Cabela's. Willing to spend about $400.
I suggest buying a bow blank from 3Rivers and finishing it yourself. You'll have alot more pride in hand finishing your own hunting bow and don't have to be a competant bowyer. Probably a bigger selection than Cabela's, and it will also save you alot of money.
My bud has some wood custom job, paid $450 and said it was the best deal he's found yet (he has owned quite a few). Of course he slobbers when he starts talking about Black Swan. Not very classic in looks, but he said they were sooooooooooooper sweet. Price is way up there though. I'll try to find out what bowyer has his fancy at the moment. Do remember him being favorable of the Tomahawks sold by 3R.
My exp is with the old Martin ML10/14, BP and Jerry Hill stuff my other bud had. I don't care much for longbows, and really disliked factory versions even more. No matter how we tuned they still just had too much shock for my taste. The Jerry Hill was almost tolerable (again I'm picky) but it was a dawg performance wise.
That was years ago and may be of no weight with todays better built rigs..........but I'd still stay the heck away from any old Martin ML10/14 or whatever models were around in the late 80's.
I did shoot my buds $450 rig, it's around 40 lbs...........and it was pretty comfy. Still too long for my recurve picky taste
I'm just a beginner. I tried it once and LOVED it! So i really wanna get involved. Probably buy an already made one and if i improve and gain more knowledge i'll be more familiar to what dimensions i want. But it still would be awesome to make one right now.
Im no expert but the long bow is a blast!
Primitive, yet exciting at the same time.
I got my bow through 3Rivers...went there towards the end of a week and spent hours shooting different bows in their upstairs range. Great group of people who work their.
Currently I own a Fred Bear Montana Longbow!
I would deal with 3Rivers again!
Started building longbows and selfbows about 20 years ago and always got my supplies at Three Rivers. If your in Ft. Wayne, its well worth the drive north. Great selection and they will fit a bow for you.
I have been dealing with these guys for years. Got my first longbow from them, back when they were located in downtown Fort Wayne. Very good people to deal with. If you are thinking of building your own you might want to also check out Bingham Projects.
