A real veteran would be unlikely to talk about his war experiences, and even less likely to brag about them in front of his grandchildren.
It depends on the situation where they served.

My late father in law was a Navigator on a B-24 in WW2 out of Italy who was shot down, was in two different German prison camps, and escaped on his second attempt back to the American lines.

He never "bragged" about his experiences, but would matter of factly tell the story if asked.
It actually is a really interesting story that I'm glad was passed on to me before he died several years ago at age 94.

I assume he could more easily talk about it because as a Navigator up in the air, he wasn't as mentally scarred as men who served in the infantry on the ground and saw and did things they just want to forget.

Not only that, but the quote is also a homage to Grandpa Cotton from the King of the Hill Series.
    Never watched KotH.

I was channeling Gregory Peck as BGEN Frank Savage in "Twelve o'Clock High", in the aftermath of the Wilhelmshaven mission where numerous members of the ground echelon stow away to be on the 8th Air Force's first mission to bomb Germany.

Savage is "gently" chewing out Harvey Stovall (Dean Jagger, in his Oscar-winning performance) for stowing away:

    Savage:
"Harvey, did you hit anything up there?"
    Stovall:
"Well, sir--my glasses were frosting over, but I think I got a piece of one."
    Savage:
    "Ours, or theirs??"
