I guess it's a social no-no to actually suggest that they'd have avoided the embarrassment by not putting their nude photos in the cloud.

Ricky Gervais got slammed for tweeting a joke to that effect, to which he replied, "Offense is the collateral damage of free speech." I think that is an awesome line.

If you google that, you'll find it's an old Mark Twain quote.

Who would have thought this whole sex thing would have caught on? Weird. :dunno:

And nudie photos of attractive young women. Who knew?

I have to say... Kate Upton was EVERYTHING and MORE ...Underneath all those clothes! And Jennifer Lawrence...well uhhh....I KNEW SHE WAS A FREAK....A FREAKNASTY!

If I had seen any of the Kate Upton photos, I might note that my mental extrapolation based on Sports Illustrated was not dissimilar to the reality as presented by the aforementioned photos, which I may or may not have seen.

    If I had seen any.

Huh huh huh . . . she said, "vag."

CTS, I bet the TOS says they are not responsible for security breeches. If they are, it will shut down cloud services overnight. Just like lawsuits killed doctors dispensing free medical advice.

The extent to which they're liable is fairly well regulated. They have to follow certain industry standards and when they fall short they can be subject to a likely successful civil lawsuit like the one that's about to land on their doorstep.

i guess that makes sense. "reasonable expectation of privacy" so to speak?

Anyone else find it ironic that the entire reason for taking a picture is so that it can be viewed later. If you don't want people to see it, why would you take it in the first place? Oh celebs, even ones as cool as Jennifer Laurence always seem to think people won't find them. You would think after all the sex tapes that came out in the mid 2000's they would have learned. Oh well, I have no pitty for them.

I do. Just because someone "should have known better" doesn't always mean they're responsible for the incident. It is literally my job to keep up on technology trends involving things like cloud storage and mobile device management and I feel safe saying that it's a nearly impossible task to know how all of the technology you interface with in your life works.

^This. It is almost certain that some/most of these women didn't even know that these pictures were on any servers at all. They took pictures which they assumed were only on their iPhone. The iPhone's default setting is to automatically back up photos to iCloud. They later deleted the photos, thinking that they were done with them. However, the hackers were able to retrieve the "deleted" photos from iCloud. In trying to help users be able to restore "deleted" content, Apple left open a back door to get at these photos (and possibly any other data backed up to iCloud).

The photos are just the most spectacular items retrieved. It's scary to think of all of the other data that may have been scooped up using this method- e-mails, contacts, calendar info, documents, account info, etc. that hasn't been talked about yet.

I just recently got a new Android tablet and have spent the last few days getting familiar with it and trying to lock it down. I'm sure I haven't got everything secured and that it still has vulnerabilities that I'm not even aware of. And that is being a technical user who is interested in security and privacy. Most users haven't a prayer of properly securing their data.

That doesn't mean they want anyone to see them.
Just like if you write a private letter to someone, I get a hold of it and post its content online for everone to see.You wont be very happy but that doesn't mean you should not have wrote it in the first place.
