Suspected modus operandi is utilization of a flaw in FindMyIPhone and an API kit from github to script-force a rainbow-table attack - the coding of neither FindMyIPhone nor iOS apparently accounting for alerting anyone of the repeated attempted intrusions nor locking out those seeking access. Basically, anyone with FindMyIPhone/iCloud is at risk until it's patched or permanently fixed.

As for morality, that's a question wholly irrelevant to the market. Adults want what they want and obviously have clearly demonstrated that they will violate both 'law' and 'morality' to get precisely that. As much as we might like to think of our neighbors as moral, and expect them to behave thusly, there's no possible successful way to ensure their compliance. We are all quite literally dependent upon the goodwill and cooperation of strangers. "Alienate the individual, lose his goodwill, and you lose society itself." - L. Neil Smith

As for leaking/social engineering, one would have to have nerves of brass to pull something like this after what happened with the Scarlett Johanssen et. al. leak - as I recall, that guy got ten years in federal PMITA prison, and apparently this leak is orders of magnitude larger.

I also question the wisdom of anyone admitting being in receipt of stolen property on a publicly-accessible website.

Hmm... first I ever heard of the "cloud", I said "no way". My bits, my drives. They're not all on connected devices, and some stuff I won't even leave on HD (Micro SD and M-Disc rawk). And yes, I know the difference between deleting a file and making it gone. I've recovered many thousands of deleted files, with few problems, over the years. I also used to lurk around the seedy underbelly of peer-to-peer music sharing networks, just to see what I could find. Pictures, videos, not just music. Some people just let the things share, um, everything. Yes, those things too. Just say there are people who would have one of those soul rending moments, to realize how lucky they were that I wasn't in the employ of law enforcement.

Who admitted to being in receipt of anything stolen? You won't find any pictures on my computer that I didn't take.

Am I the only one who finds looking up stolen pictures of people in the nude to be a level of wrong I'm not comfortable with?
I have to admit I don't mind looking and as tempting as it is to check out someone like kate upton, those photos weren't intended for the public. To me it seems looking at them would be like stealing.

Are you sure? Most browsers save thumbs...

Pretty sure. Even if that were the case where is the culpability in observing photographs posted onto internet forums? I didn't post them, didn't obtain them and didn't provide them to anyone. Now the persons who have them posted onto their forums? Perhaps.

I'm in no way saying that viewing them is illegal, as I doubt it is. What I am saying is that even browsing is generally not anonymous and that your computer likely captures the images you view. I've seen it in enough child porn cases.

I am also saying that I have moral qualms, even if perfectly legal, which it likely is. I have moral issues with porn per se, much less stolen pics meant for a husband/wife/lover etc.

I stumbled across them and I looked. It's far from the first time it's happened to a celebrity and as mentioned upthread, its easily avoided.

I am not judging anyone, I don't expect or demand that anyone agree with my take on morality. I simply was curious if others felt the way I did. I am as human as the next guy and am certainly in no position to cast stones...

I'm not sayin' I was so much interested, or collecting anything. Generally I'd just have it hoover up wide swathes, by file name extension, part of the file name, what have you. I got a lot of sunsets, architecture, birthday parties and whatnot, just the occasional freaky stuff. In fact, mostly I was looking for ways in, so I could make sure they were closed up on my own systems. Just had to see what was being exposed.

I don't so much have a problem with pr0n; you might, that's fine, but for me what's pertinent is the distinction between what's published intentionally to be viewed by people who simply aren't ashamed at it, vs what they do in privacy without expecting to be exposed. What it comes down to, is you have to have a fundamental understanding of the underlying technologies, awareness of the options, and a lot of discretion. So many people fail at all three.

From what I've read some of the pics that were released were taken down pretty quickly, others have been left up. Kinda makes me wonder if some of the "leaked" pics weren't quite so.

I am not ashamed to state that I looked at them.

It is like a car wreck I just can help it. Looking is one thing uploading/downloading another. It was available I looked.
