I got an email this morning from a guy I do not know saying he wanted to by a gun I have listed in the INGO classifieds. Here was his email verbatim:

"Hi my name is XXXX and I'm interested in the 1911 you have on the IN gun owners forum. I actually created an account just to reply to that thread but I didn't know there was a probationary period before I could post anything. Anyways feel free to just respond to this or text me at XXX-XXX-XXXX"

I had never had this happen to me. For a moment, I considered it as I do want to sell the gun, but it just did not seem right for many reasons. So I sent him this response:

"I appreciate your interest in my firearm. However, the classified rules on INGO exist for a reason. I had to abide by them when I joined. I am unwilling to sell you this gun upon hearing that you just created an account to get access to me and to try to buy this gun.

If you want to join and contribute 50 quality posts to INGO or become a site supporter, I will then consider selling you the gun."

Any of you ever experienced this kind of situation? How did you deal with it?

(I think you did the honorable thing.)

I'm a little confused. Did you include your email in the INGO ad, or did he get your email from some other manner?

You refered to him as an Armslister. Is the ad cross posted on Armslist?

If he got your email through the ad on INGO, then the solution is simple. Remove it. This is precisely why it's frowned upon to include an email or phone number in the ad.

I definitely do not post my email in my classified ads. I guess it is visible in my profile somewhere. The ad is NOT crossposted on Armslist. I do not do Armslist at all anymore.

Unfortunately there are ways around the 50 post rule.
Looks like this fella found one of them.
    Kudos to you.

Site supporter is the best way around the 50 post rule. I'd have done it myself many moons ago but a thread was running at one time talking about a bunch of elitist crap regarding site supporters vs.
"Them". I decided I preferred being "them" rather than one of "us".

Spider sense going off with this one. :nono:

Are e-mails listed in INGO profiles? I'm not seeing them?

Wonder if the OP's add was targeted due to being listed for quite a while?

Wonder if the other 1911 sellers in the classifieds have been targeted?

Does the "Send Email" button on profiles bypass the 50 post limit and go directly to the registered email? I'm guessing so since there is a separate button for a private message within the site.

You can send and email to someone on INGO through their profile once per 24 hour period. You can also disable this in your own profile.

I think you did the right thing. You just don't know anymore and if your gut is telling you not to do something, don't do it. It has served me well over the years.

Ah, thanks guys. Now I remember somewhat. I've always had that feature disabled, except for admin, so I don't think of it.

Can anybody confirm that the email link in profile does not tattle your email (if you don't reply) only passes the message? If this is not how it works, it's how it should work
