The Jamil and DadSmith Democracy vs. Republic Thread

Government: Of the People - Really necessary if you ever want to get a good night's sleep and have nice things. For the People - Very thoughtful, good feature. By the People - Yeah, that's where things go south.

      Gardening 2024

I got mine from a pet & garden place in Muncie. It's expensive to get straw from a place like that, but typically only use one bale a year or so.

      Gardening 2024

I used to have more trouble with blights on my tomatoes, back when I grew more heirlooms and before I moved my beds to a full sun location. I used to start using copper spray and Daconil about the time I put the cages on (about now), and spray every week or so through the season. The Daconil...

The Funny Picture/Video Thread, 15th Edition: Be more like Coleman.

I'd probably stop working on my Fiscal Year Third Quarter report.

      Is The Left/Right Divide Bridgeable?

That question has me wondering if it would be possible to find the politically ideological center of the US, and if so, I wonder where that would be?

And I thought we were safe!

When I was 16, my first full-time job was at a hog/dairy farm. One of my least favorite jobs was to take the old Farmall M, hitched to a corn bin wagon and go around and feed sows. The corn and pellet feed had to be poured out on a concrete slab to keep it out of the mud, but in one pasture...

      Gardening 2024

When I was a kid, I mostly hated working in the garden, spading, hoeing, picking, whatever. Now, I can spend literally an entire day doing nothing but weeding my raised beds, and its quality time.

      Snake ID help please

Very interesting pic. That black rat snake has a condition called kinking. It’s like scoliosis in people. Years ago when I bred snakes, I had a couple hatchlings that had like two or three kinks. I’ve never seen a snake with its whole spine affected. It appears to be otherwise very healthy.

      Snake ID help please

I think you’re right, it looks like a northern ringneck, and they are pretty tiny snakes.

My father's been gone since 2008. The silver lining is that now Father's Day is like a 2nd birthday. I get gifts, and I don't have to buy one.

Cicada Brood XIX & XIII 2024

My kids live in Durham NC, and it's been crazy there. Their dogs were eating so many it made them sick.

Some would argue theres no intelligent life on earth!

For all we know, humans could be in that class of organisms for which advanced aliens fumigate their equipment before they return to their home planet.

Another: what kind of plant question...

Back in the day, DNR used to propagate Multiflora Rose and give plants out free to landowners for habitat creation. As invasives go, it's a very good food source for quite a few bird species. I read somewhere that Mockingbirds will occur year-round in some areas specifically because there are...

      Is The Left/Right Divide Bridgeable?

I remember in the book Blackhawk Down, the author talked a lot about his interviews with Somali people who belonged to the different factions that were fighting for control. He said that all of the people would begin by saying something to the effect of "All we want is peace." but when asked...

      18 year old water softener

Back in the day, all softeners and water heaters were "hard-plumbed" into the system, since they were expected to last 20+ years. I think it says something that now they're mostly connected with flexible "quick-connect" lines.

      18 year old water softener

I bought a Kinetico Model 60 in 1996. It has dual resin tanks and an impeller meter so it uses no electricity and recharges based on the actual gallons used. With the dual resin tanks, you can recharge any time, because it switches to the new tank and recharges the other one, with no...

      18 year old water softener

I’ve read that softener resin lasts much longer if you’re on well water, since chlorine breaks it down. When the resin in mine quit working, it didn’t clog, it just stopped softening. I got new resin online and changed it out myself. Works fine again.

Two bodies found in Carroll County

I would like to know if they found ammo with the gun, and if so, was it the same as the unfired round from the scene or not.
