With nearly 40 million guns sold in 2020, combined with the industry capacity to produce 9 billion rounds, only equates to a paltry little over 200 rounds for each new gun sold. Leaving not a single round for the 310 million guns sold since the late 90's. How many rounds does the typical buyer buy with their new gun?

The following are from their respective articles:

U.S. gun sales surged 60% to 4,137,480 in January, the largest single-month total since figures started to be recorded in 1998. The rise is part of a trend. Gun sales in the United States rose 40% last year to 39,695,315. The figure also represents the high water mark in gun sales since the current record-keeping system went into effect. Increases by state in January varied substantially, as has been the case for years.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation tracks gun sales and publishes a list of how many are handled as part of its National Instant Criminal Background Check System. Each month, the figures are reported by state. Nearly everyone put through this system qualifies as a buyer. People who are excluded usually have criminal records. Of the more than 310 million checks that have been done since 1998, there have only been 1.5 million denials. Therefore, the data is the best proxy for U.S. gun sales available.

During the .22 rimfire bubble, the productive capacity was increased from about 4 billion rimfire rounds to 5 billion rimfire rounds per year. The National Shooting Sports Foundation has estimated total ammunition produced for the United States market in 2017 at 8.1 billion rounds. In 2018, the total ammunition production for the United States was estimated at 8.7 billion rounds. The numbers for 2019 should be published in December of 2020.

A reasonable extrapolation puts the amount of ammunition produced for the United States market at somewhat over 9 billion rounds, of which 5 billion are rimfire and 4 billion are centerfire rifle, pistol, and shotgun rounds in 2020.

What that tells me is that criminals themselves are not trying to get their guns through dealers but as the data shows it's friends/family or stolen.

You all do realize that these shortages ate OUR fault!

    1. We have been advocating for everyone to take advantage of their right to self defense by buying firearms.
    2. We have further pushed to get training, this burns ammo.
    3. We also push for continued practice.
Now that people are finally doing what we advised...

    We start complaining!

Wow, those numbers are wild - thanks for sharing. 9 billions round of ammo a year....dang. I'm surprised that 5 billion of it was rimfire! I know a .22 LR gun is a common gun to have, but I guess I had no idea how prevalent they are. I guess I'm partially biased in that I don't own rimfire guns and tend to be very frustrated with failures to fire when I shoot them.

Rimfire can't be reloaded, and it has already vanished for years at a time, so we all have to stock up on it. I'm embarassed to say 22 is the only caliber I actually feel I have a reasonable supply of exactly because of those reasons.

I remember $55 dollar 500 bulk Winchester at a local gun store in 2013, though back then i could still shoot 9mm and .223 for reasonable prices. It seems like 22lr is always the first thing to go and the last to come back into stock.

But if you have an original Rock Crusher Bullet Swedge you can Swedge them into 30 caliber jackets.

Just had nephew that I had told and begged him to buy ammunition and magazine's and rifles when it was cheap before the Chinese death disease hit.
He text me asking for ammo. I reminded him he was flush with cash for years, and could have bought thousands of rds a week and still had money left to blow. Now he wants Ammunition at 2019 prices. I told him good luck and next time I tell you to get something do it don't waste money on video games and sound systems and 60" TV etc.

I love him but I will make him accept this life lesson. If SHTF I'll share but right now he needs to learn the hard way.

So the process is to create new bullets for reloading into non-rimfire cartridges out of .22LR brass?

    :faint:

That's pretty cool, but their solution for uncrimping the rim isn't very good. Meaning that they have no solution for it at all other than "it'll be alright". If you can buy new rimfire brass on the cheap, I can see reloading it getting to be a thing as the prices keep going up and up.
