ISWYDTThis thread really does show the failure of the public education system, and the liberal mentality of many in our country. We are not the governing body. The United States is not a democracy. I hear this stated as fact from the vast majority of people under 30, and many of the liberal politicians who are trying to limit our freedoms. Democracies are destined for failure. Democracies are eventually plagued with favoritism and unfairness because they resort to mob rule. Unfortunately, we have seen many of these issues creeping into our society in recent history, and I feel that it is due in part to the notion that is being proclaimed that our country is a Democracy.
Our nation was formed as a Constitutional Republic. Our representatives are elected democratically.

Okay, I'll play on this one, too. And, again: why did you delete your OP?
Why do you think we need to have a "thoughtful discussion re more stringent controls on gun ownership"? What's the purpose of that discussion? What do you hope to accomplish through more stringent controls on gun ownership?
Wait: didn't you argue in your other thread from this morning that the AR15 is a "weapon of war"? Which is it: a weapon of war, or useless against the government? It can't be both - yet the people who take your position keep insist on turning the AR15 into Schrodinger's Gat: both things simultaneously.
Nope. We are a nation of laws, not a nation of mob rule. The Constitution (including the bill of rights) puts constraints upon the majority, to ensure that the majority cannot become tyrannical and infringe upon the rights of the minority.
This hatred of the Electoral College is a Shibboleth for "I have no clue how a constitutional republic of sovereign states works."
Sure, Jan.
Representative Republic is a redundancy. A Republic, by definition is a representative form of government. It would be like saying a majority democracy. Is there a difference between a Constitutional Republic and a Representative Republic? I’ve always heard the latter.
Short answer to the EC question. It is so only the 5 or 6 of the largest most needy cities of the country don't get to have all the say.Why is it that many gun owners cannot have a thoughtful discussion re more stringent controls on gun ownership? Are some of you really thinking that you will be grabbing your AR and going to war against the US government? We do all understand that WE are the government in this country, right? The majority is designed to determine the direction of the country (with the exception of the absurdly silly Electoral College. I recommend everyone read the history of and reasons for the EC to help understand why it should have never happened and should be dismantled today. If I called anyone a name in this post, it was not my intention.
