Of all the things that have been done to make the shutdown hurt, is anyone else surprised NICS is still up and running? You'd think they would have found a way to prevent firearms transfers by now. Anyone think they've considered (or even tried) doing this?

I doubt they'd care at this point... Imagine--they stop answering the phone and all gun shops grind to a halt. I'll bet it's been considered.

NICS is considered an "essential law enforcement function" and thus has remained open. Shutting NICS down would be akin to furloughing all the airport security screeners; not gonna happen as total bedlam would result.

Ive wondered that too. Honestly guns and associated items are about the only safe bet economically wise. They are selling and will continue to sell when homes, cars, appliances, etc arent selling. And the government makes a ton off sales tax.

Does that mean they have to keep all parts of it fully operational? I wouldn't put anything past the current administration. Laws don't seem to always matter.

I fear that if they were to shut nics down that millions of americans would view that as the last straw in a push to ban guns, and it may be the spark that ignites a fire that cannot be put out.

If they shut down NICS....they probably fear that it would go back to the 80s when no NICS would be needed. Correct?

If gun shops don't get an answer within X days already, can't they arleady turn over the gun to the buyer?

Thats what I thought. Thats why they don't shut it down. Criminals would get guns w/a mere 3 day wait. Only way quicker would be to get a hold of Eric Holders cell phone number and speak with a Mexican accent.

I think we should double check on this... if you note the table says Delay RESPONSE. Think of it this way, if you don't get an answer when you call at 0300, cause NICS isn't open, do you then just get to transfer the firearm in 3 days? Just thinking that the table isn't a valid argument to NICS going down/dark.
