A revolver has more craftsmanship and metal alloys used to make them. But you still can find a revolver at a low price. Look at a Smith & Wesson 340PD Air Lite Sc, 357 Mag, 1 7/8 Scandium Cost around 900.00 which is a higher price then many semi's but this price is what you will find many Sigs, HK, Kimbers, Colts and Hi Points "OK Hi Point is my joke so for those who lack a sense of humor don't freak out" lol ;). But you can save a little money if you get a Ruger LCR-357-LG Revolver which will come with Crimson Trace Lasergrips, 357 Mag will cost around 730.00 and you still can save more money by getting a Taurus Model 651 Protector 5 Round 357 Mag, 2" W/Shrouded Hammer at a cost around 375.00. All three of these makes are the same style of gun but the differences is the name of the company and the quality of the gun. In many ways revolvers are not to much more then a semi-auto because you can also spend a lot on a Sig compared to a Glock or even a Taurus. I never look at how many rounds a gun can hold for the cost but the craftsmanship in which goes into the building of the firearm. Down side of a revolvers is the rounds it holds but if you have a misfire just pull the trigger again, plus if you were out in the bush in Alaska you will want a revolver over a semi-auto because of this reson. In the end it is all one persons preference of what they like. Me I love them both :)

It's probably the same reason that .410 shotgun shells cost more than 12 gauge shells. Less than half the size, but over twice the cost because their isn't the demand for them.

I'm not sure what OP was getting at but I think he was saying why buy a gun that holds 5-6-8 when you can get a gun that holds 18 for less money.
I have always said (sarcasm on) if you want a gun that holds 18 rounds you probably need it. Accuracy by volume!!!!
Some of us try to make sure it's quality over quantity. (accuracy)
Revolvers are not for everyone but some of us prefer the beauty of them and skill required to use one at any cost.

The same reason pretty hookers cost more than ugly ones?
    Exactly:yesway:

Looking at how my revolvers work, I consider them more complex that a semi-auto handgun.

As several have already pointed out, I think this machining and fitting drives the price up.....

alright, a bunch of good answers..but in all honesty, what i took away from this thread is this: if i buy a revolver, its because i have the spare money to do so, and want to do so because i think revolvers are pretty, or historic, or fun to shoot...and in that essence, at my young age, and on my budget, i will not be buying a revolver...they are antiquated

They are more expensive so it will keep the Glocktrash from realizing a revolver is very accurate and more powerful

Before the cascade to semi-auto's, most shootouts with a revolver were 1 or 2 shots. If you missed, you died, because the other guy knew what he was doing and would drop you in your tracks.

Unlike todays spray and pray theorisms.

If you had to make a 50' head shot with your carry gun could you do it? With my 686 or 29 either one I would put it in his eye.:yesway:

To be quite honest, IDK...but I still love a high quality revolver! There is a lot of work making sure the timing and everything on a revolver works correctly before it leaves the factory...that, and possibly, the cost involved with all the materials adds up compared to a semi?

With 3 of my 4 main revolvers...yes! With my semi-auto's...I would only try with one, my G-36 in .45 acp...it's crazy accurate...but that's the .45 acp round more than anything!

I read the question as "how many years have we been making revolvers, and why do they bring what they do? I know materials are pricey, but I have to think the R&D, and much of the tooling is paid for by now... this is coming from a guy who really wants a s&w 357 but can't justify the same price as a nice steel SA. I know, supply/demand. Just whining. Good or bad the mechanism isn't really cutting edge.
