I just finished watching hamburger hill (Battle of Hamburger Hill - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) while doing exercise. This is probably my 4th time watching it and there was a part in the movie that got me thinking about the question in this thread.
In a scene where the US soldiers are talking one is having how we wants to go back home and get some of that "free love" he keeps hearing about. Another one says it's over-rated and that yes there is free love those hippies love cats, dogs, etc.. they love everyone except you (ie the solider). All I could think about with that line was that the hippies were liberals to the EXTREME!
Let me backtrack a bit. I was born in the late 1970s. When I look back at US history I break it up as follows.
Generation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
WW II Generation - ie The Great Generation
(born from around 1901 to 1924)
The silent Generation - Until today I had never heard of them
(born 1925 to 1945)
The Baby Boomers - ie the kids of the WW II Vets
(about 1946 up to approximately 1964)
Generation X - My generation
(ranging from 1961 to the latest 1981)
Generation Y - ie. Millennial babies
(date 1970s to the latest in the early 2000s)
Generation Z - ie Internet babies
(generally dated in the early 1990s+)
For sure Generation Y and Z can not be to blame for the current state of the US. They are way too young. Granted I'm sure they will make their own mistakes.
Now before we can answer who is to blame when do we begin to think of the blame starting? Yes the creation of SS was a mistake, probably the first name into the coffin of getting people to think of "my entitlements".
Up next I would say federal welfare (started in the 1930s and some major overhauls in the 1960s per Welfare - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) so I think then that Generation X would also be in the clear in terms of starting the problem.
Which leaves the WW II Generation, The silent Generation and The Baby Boomers. So would it be safe to say that the WWII gen is to blame for the start of SS and the silent and baby boomers are to blame for welfare and thus all three of those generations of which the baby boomers are still around (majority) are really the ones that got us into this mess.
I'm not picking a fight with the old folks just want to understand the mentality and thinking of the prior generations and what their actions (if any) have now cause us to be where we are at. Yes Generations X, Y, and Z have other things to blame for but here I'm focusing on how we got to where we are at now in which society is a "give me, give me" states.
