My brother and I came up with a Christmas theme recently, guns of the Civil War for the kids. At present I am on the hunt for suitable gifts but while my knowledge of BP is wide (can rattle of histories and models), it is very thin (you know the actual manipulation and mechanics of the weapons, the important stuff).

Since males learn by doing, I went down to Stockwell, Indiana (on 52, in SE corner of Tippecanoe Co.) to a friend well-versed and well-stocked with black-powder revolvers. I had a literal blast.

Sometimes you have to take off the Tactical Pants and slow down. Made mistakes, so I learned a lot.

If you have given the black powder world short shrift because of other gun priorities, I urge you to circle back and see what you are missing.

Apparently I have a new vice.
