Please elaborate. I just purchased the current generation, and I'm well aware of the complaints about the 10 round magazine and new bottom metal. Anything else?

The first generation wasn't made long, and are considered unicorns. They rarely hit the open market often, aren't available long when they do, and go for more than the current generation new off the shelf... The most notable changes are:
    Stock: digital camo to black.
Bottom metal: AICS metal and magazines to proprietary
    Scope base: 20MOA to 0MOA
Bolt handle: Oversized smooth to textured cylinder
I feel like I'm missing an item or two, but the coffee hasn't kicked in fully yet... Please don't misinterpret this as a criticism of the newer generation, they are fantastic! I was about to purchase one myself but got extremely, extremely lucky at the chance to purchase mine.

you could always find a really cheap scope or throw a red dot on it for now, shoot your Savage at 100 yards to break it in and see how you like it.
It doesn't take an $800 scope to see how much you like a rifle...
