Personally I prefer the 1911. I have three of them and a Sig P220. The 1911's are more accurate for me and easier to clean. Just my $.02.

I've owned quite a few sigs, but never a 220. So let me ask this: Are you looking at a DA/SA 220, or a SAO 220? I would hope the DA/SA, because if condition you carry in is the determining factor a SAO 220 will perform the same as a 1911.

The thing that concerns me about the 1911 is the commitment to keep running

Interesting, is there any reason to believe that the sig would require less maintenance than the particular 1911 you want?

Seems like the 1911's that are fussy tend to be the high end very close tolerance guns. The glock sloppy 1911's tend to run dirty very well. In my limited experience.

Earlier today I had the opportunity to fire a P220 and compare it with my Para GI Expert. The P220 is a nice gun. It shoots well and it's pretty accurate. For me it shot a little low, but that may have been from anticipating recoil. Still having that problem every now and again. At 25 feet it shot consistently 6 inches low from point of aim. My 1911 put every round where I was aiming except for the occasional flyer from the previously mentioned recoil anticipation.

Single stack mags like the 1911 and it's a Sig so there is some measure of reliability. They are pretty much even in my book. But I lean toward the 1911 because it's classic and parts commonality and availability.

I have experience with both. The 1911 I shoot is the Springfield Range Officer. This is a great gun!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Both very accurate. Springfield has adjustable sights to fine tune point of aim, sig p220 is fixed sights but accurate out of the box. Range Officer can be found for less $$$ than P220.

Marines just issued new contract with Colt for $22.5 million to issue new 1911s. This speaks volumes to me regarding many of the issued you have expressed concern about.

    220 or 1911 ?

I own and shoot several varieties of both . The 220 is actually "Commander" size but feels larger than "Government" size. Both systems shoot and function equally well. I suggest trying both and then decide.

Ill take the Sig any day.I like the feel and handling much better than the 1911 s
My Sig is very accurate and reliable too so no reason to change something that works well.I have 2 different grips with the gun .I fat and 1 thin.

Sig 220 is a specific make and model of gun. 1911 is a platform built by MANY makers....

Not meaning to be a smartazz ..... a little more infomation is needed. Some 1911s are crap, most are not. The good ones require no more maintenance than any other gun, and will last much longer than the average shooter.
