It's not that the Republican Party couldn't field viable alternatives. It's that a large segment of republican voters wanted Trump. It didn't help that democrat's strategies to disqualify Trump have proven the streisand is real. So it's Trump. But regardless, they'd have opposed any non-progressive.
Then by definition they couldn't field viable alternatives.

With regards to covid and accountability, RFK would be a good choice but that’s it. That’s not enough. With a very old man like Trump possibly becoming president, a solid VP choice is more important than in most elections.

“One large donor to both the Trump and Kennedy campaigns told the outlet that the effort to recruit Kennedy to serve as Trump's running mate is still very much alive amid Trump insiders.”

    Nope.

The Trump campaign made clear Sunday that Kennedy is not on their short list of vice presidential picks, denying reports of alleged overtures to the independent presidential candidate.

"NO ONE from the Trump Campaign ever approached RFK jr (or ever will)," said senior adviser Chris LaCivita on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. LaCivita went on to describe Kennedy as a "radical" environmentalist.

Former President Donald Trump criticized Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine on Saturday for striking down legislation that would have restricted the medical care of transgender minors and banned transgender girls from female sports.

"DeWine has fallen to the Radical Left. No wonder he gets loudly booed in Ohio every time I introduce him at Rallies, but I won’t be introducing him any more. I’m finished with this 'stiff.' What was he thinking," Trump posted on Truth Social. "The bill would have stopped child mutilation, and prevented men from playing in women’s sports. Legislature will hopefully overturn. Do it FAST!!!”
    Well, that aged well!
