We just put in a steel range, 7 targets between 10-25y. I also just bought and am totally new to using a shot timer. I bought it so we can run contests and compete against each other, much like the steel matches my son and I have had so much fun with.

I would love to hear fun activities we can put together using our new toys. Any drills/contests we can run would be great to hear. Thanks!

Here’s the current setup. All targets are easy to move around.

Whats behind the targets? I have been at ranges with much taller berms and still heard ricochets going overhead.

The pic may not reflect it, but the topography is pretty hilly. From shooters position, missed shots travel into gully, impacting ground maybe 30 feet down embankment. You’d have to make a solid effort to send an errant shot off the farm from this point. The shooters position is already uphill from the targets.

Don't get me wrong, not trying to pick on you. Just trying to keep you out of trouble. Keep folks from being harmed.

Your picture looks good for where misses will go. The concern is where top of the steel edgers will ricochet to?

After taking another look at this thread, especially my first picture, I now see where the concern comes from with regard to what’s beyond my targets. That upthread pic isn’t from shooters prospective. Here’s a different pic. Although not well demonstrated by either photo, from the shooters position, missed rounds impact berm about 30’ below its crest. Between the topography, location of neighboring structures (nearest is more than mile down range, up significant elevation), limited number of known shooters, administrative controls such as guns kept at low and ready, no handling guns above horizontal, I feel comfortable with the risk level created. I do feel a duty to ensure every round that leaves my gun stays on the property.

Trex arms on youtube has a ton of instructional videos. He usually does them under time and they are good FREE fundamental drills. In the drills he usually says what the par times are that he looks for.

I like to set the timer, draw, fire one on steel. Reholster. Repeat over and over again.

Upward angle ricochets are a issue, it would depend on what is behind your targets at a distance, our local club quit steel use because of the ricochet liability
