In 2022, Californians spent a total of $8.8 billion on the lottery, the third-highest total in the country and about 8 percent of the total $108 billion spent on lotteries nationwide. So if we can assume those numbers are roughly proportional for just the Powerball, the odds of someone from California winning all four of the largest jackpots in history would be about 0.004 percent — or 1 in 25,000. Your odds of getting struck by lightning are about 1 in 15,000.

    The House ALWAYS wins.
    Duh.

I used to laugh, there used to be signs up on I-65 saying "Beat Trump at his own game".
    It was for the casinos.

    You can't.
Unless you place a bet, win, and NEVER go back.

Did you read the point of the article? Residents of CA are winning a highly improbable percentage of the mega jackpots; government already took their cut of the intake, and then gets a huge cut of the outtake if the winners are in CA…

The government always wins the lotto and they are still broke.
I never said anything about being broke, or having money.
    But the House.. wins.

Most of the games have odds. Some are better, some are worse, but there are odds.
Some of the games have some input with skill.

Blackjack has odds, though skill can effect it.
    Roulette, is all odds.

If you play the lotto, it's only odds.

When I get pull tabs for my American Legion, I can choose between 5-10-15-20 percent return for each box we purchase.
Everybody loves when we buy the 5 percent return boxes, cause they win more.
But, we still have to pay for the games, and pay the taxes. And the gaming tax is not dependent on how much you MAKE, it's determined by how much we're spending on the games.
    And the license fee.
So, we sell a bunch of the 5 percent, and end up making nothing.

Playing the lotto is a suckers game.
Playing the lotto in a liberal paradise only makes it worse.

What if more Californians than any other state play the lottery? that would explain it. At least partly.
“In 2022, Californians spent a total of $8.8 billion on the lottery, the third-highest total in the country and about 8 percent of the total $108 billion spent on lotteries nationwide. So if we can assume those numbers are roughly proportional for just the Powerball, the odds of someone from California winning all four of the largest jackpots in history would be about 0.004 percent — or 1 in 25,000. Your odds of getting struck by lightning are about 1 in 15,000.”

“So Californians are buying 8 percent of the tickets, yet winning every one of the biggest jackpots in Powerball history. And it just so happens this is in the state with the highest income taxes in the country.”

The lottery is a tax on gullibility.
Well, people do win them. I play once in awhile, like when the jackpot is insanely huge, but I don't go overboard. But I typically only do it once, even if nobody wins and it rolls over. Just a one and done kinda thing.

Well I sure haven’t ever won. Course I have never purchased any kind of lottery ticket. Wife used to buy a few for kids and me at Christmas. Some won a couple bucks here and there but the net $ figure was always negative.
