There are a multitude of legitimate reasons I can think of why Trump wouldn't be on the ballot. "Closed primary" in this context is not one of them.

This is more of a symptom of people believing that their reps are regular people just like them, and that "their guy" can do no wrong. Also gerrymandering... Can't boot someone out if the electorate is not competitive.

As I understand it, he was up for re-election this year as senator but wasn't allowed to be on the ballot more than once. He's done with elected office for now.

Media is salivating about a war at the convention. Said it hadn't happened since '76. I assume they meant for the GOP(wasn't Reagan there then and lost out?). Hope we don't have a repeat of the 76 election and get a Hillary for 4 years...

Correct. As I understand it some states that recently went caucus from primary did it so favored sons could compete for other office without having to give up their seat (the rules say can't appear on two ballots)
