    The advice I received involves taking sudafed for nasal congestion, moistening the nasal passages with saline spray, and yawning/chewing gum to stimulate the Eustachian tubes that cause the popping.

    good advice and it makes sense. I'm guessing for whatever reason the tubes were plugged and the sudafed is making a big difference.
