as with any hound, I don't doubt it could have been awhile. They put that nose down to scent and they are gone. We let ours out in the back with us if we are working on the cars or taking the trash out, no leashes. We also let them run from the gate to the car when we go for a r i d e . have to spell it so they don't think we're going now. They, thankfully, have always stayed right with us. But they have a run of the yard in the fence. Must be enough for them
