Not anymore. Although kindergarten is not a required grade, the have standardized tests and learning requirements for the students. :n00b:
It reflects poorly on the teacher if a student doesn't grasp a concept that traditionally would have been taught in 1st or 2nd grade. Again for emphasis, kindergarten is NOT a required grade (at least in Lawrence Township) but they need to know this stuff to be ready for 1st grade...nevermind the kids who didn't go to kindergarten. They'll be fine.

We learned this with Karma. We were all amazed that she occasionally had "Home" work....freaking Homework in "K"

Now that I look back they were preparing their little minds for the tasks they would face later on.

Getting a better understanding of the big picture really does help in the long run, but it has to go hand in hand with the traditional method, IMO.

My favorite mental shortcut is teaching percents. If you can find 10% (which is, of course, simple), you can find 20%, 30%, 40%, etc, by just multiplying it by 2, 3, 4...

    Exactly.

Yes. It means the urostomy and subsequent reconstruction of his intestines after removing his cancer-riddled bladder was successful and hence finally come home from the hospital.

Well, then, that's awesome. Sorry, I must have missed that. Prayers for a speedy and complete recovery.

When we were visiting him the other day, his white board in his room will all his info had a space for "goals today". It said "pain management, sit up, 20 steps" or something like that. We wanted to erase that and write "Fart" for his daily goal. I was gonna do it, but the nurse came in. :(
