I had an '01 540i M Sport. Absolutely LOVED driving that thing but DAYUM the maintenance issues that start arising around the 120k mile mark!! I've only given up in my quest to make lemonade out of lemons on 1 vehicle but on this one I saw the hand writing in the checkbook and decided to bail on it. It was just starting to experience minor transmission slippage which in researching was typically due to an internal seal failure in the torque convertor. It was also becoming apparent that the timing chains and guides were due and this was after all of the other maintenance time and $$$$$ I'd already spent on it.Cooler plugged solid. Hard to say if that happened after burning it up or that is the cause of it being burnt.
Definitely top 5 in my career for most fd up trans to rebuild

I sold it to some kid that didn't hear a word I said about what he was facing, he was grinning ear to ear when he left the driveway. His dad thanked me for being honest about and told me that junior was about to learn a life lesson.
My wife still catches me staring lustily at 540's and 740's with the sport package on Craigslist.
Not mine but I wish. Just don't let the wife know!
