Just to be a denny, most highways are divided into ten sections and 10% or one of those sections gets redone every year with a ten year life expectancy. This evens out the states expenses, provides consistent work for contractors to bid for, and steady employment for workers. This is why they do not build roads that last 30 years anymore, kind of just in time roads.

A.1. Sauce was invented in England in about 1824 by a chef to King George IV who hailed it as “A.1.” which was the top rating that Lloyds of London gave to ships.

KGIV croaked in 1830 and the chef, Henderson William Brand, went public with it as A.1. Sauce. In 1862 under new owners it was introduced at the International Exhibit in London as Brand’s International Sauce. I assume that’s where the date on the label came from. “A.1” was registered as a trademark in the United States in 1895, but it didn’t actually make it to America until 1906.

So it really had nothing to do with the Civil War at all.
