I'm a bit puzzled too, but I think as you get closer and closer to infinity on the small corners, you take out the corners that are giving you the extra length.
Here's a way to see if Pi = 4 or 3.141592654 like is traditionally held.
Take the example above and cut out 4" of string to make the square shown. Now wrap the string around the circle. Do you have any string left over?
Or, cut just enough string to trace the circle. It should be about 3/4" of the length of the other.
