WUT AM I GONNA DO?I don't have a problem with unemployment as it was designed to be. That is to provide somewhat of a safety net if someone, through no fault of their own (company downsizing, closing, etc., not being fired for just cause) find themselves unemployed. I collected it for 3 months myself when the company I was working for went out of business. Fortunately that company gave us plenty of notice and incentives to stay on to the end. In that time, I began applying for my current job, and it took nearly a full year to finally get hired. Old company closed September 30, 2009 and I started my current job January 2, 2010. I got a severance package, but the unemployment allowed me to cover my basic needs, while my severance package covered other expenses and bills.
I am not in favor of unlimited benefits, nor this "enhancement" that does nothing but encourage people not to go back to work.
Why, sit on the sofa and eat bon bons of course!WUT AM I GONNA DO?
in today's worI have a small body shop. 90 percent of my work is fleet vehicles such as utility trucks and vans. I also do spray in bedliners. I've tried to hire kids to start out learning at $10 an hour with 0 results. I've even tried $15 just as a going rate for anyone that would just give it a shot. I just simply cannot pay a guy $20 an hour for me to teach them and not really accomplish any more work. Some kids are willing but expect way to much for no experience and I've only had one adult actually take the job. He worked for 3 weeks and quit because he didn't want to do anymore than sweep and take out trash. The day I handed him a grinder was his last day. Never saw him again.
the people who would rather sit on their @ss waiting on "free" don't really care about retirement. and they usually are the ones who recieve "free" healthcare. they figure there will always be benifits available when they retire from their years of doing nothing to prepare fro their future. The unemployment is enticing right now, but what about benefits, preparing for retirement, etc.?
fortunately the company i work for allows me to pay people if they have to quarentine. unfortunately i had to put restrictions on that policy. So if one guy on my crew gets COVID and the rest are forced to quarantine ( not able to come to work) should they just starve? Screw them right?
The government has been an insurance company for about 100 years now. That’s never gonna change.
I can tell you the result of no paid sick leave during this pandemic since I watched it first hand. Guys come to work sick and don’t say anything since they gotta eat, then next thing you know then entire plant is sick. It got so bad this last fall that the plant just started sending people randomly for a covid test in order to keep it in check.
My employer went through the same thing. Now if you are considered to be exposed you're required to use PTO until you are tested. A positive test puts you on paid covid leave.fortunately the company i work for allows me to pay people if they have to quarentine. unfortunately i had to put restrictions on that policy.
the 2 "just enoughs" i spoke of earlier were putting themselves in situations where they were constantly exposed to C-19. i had to monitor social media and keep track of where people were going (parties, clubs, health spas, etc). if i found out someone went to a hotspot or restricted place, i wouldn't pay them for being off.
i DID NOT enjoy have to be a babysitter to a bunch of supposedly grown people.
And everyone of the employers you just mentioned cannot find workers.I’ll admit my evidence is stories I’ve heard from people in person and on the internet. Anecdotal at best but how else do you explain a “shortage” of people willing to work aweful schedules, for low pay ( 7.25 an hour is only 280 a week, 12.50 is only 440) and be treated horribly? Perhaps the gov dole is driving up market rate just a bit but the service industry also has competition for their workers like never before.
if you have a car you can make 80 bucks in a couple hours doing insta cart and or door dash.
you can apply at FedEx and sort boxes for 19.50 an hour
you can apply to literally any construction company and get a job at 15 an hour.
you can get paid to go to truck driving school and be making 70k or more in 6 months
those jobs you either set your own schedule or you work a pretty steady schedule, those jobs even include benefits.
now put yourself in the shoes of a 18-25 year old who used to work a fast food establishment. What motivation could you possibly have to pass up those jobs I listed that have benefits and actually make enough to afford rent? Only one I can come up with is a drug test......
im all ears if someone has a valid argument for taking a job making less money, working less than full time and with no Benefits. These jobs require no more skill than McDonald’s and arguably less than waiting a table.
yay! for the most part.Another step in the right direction.
Indiana is dropping the $300 extra federal money next month.
Indiana to end all federal pandemic unemployment benefits, including extra weekly $300
Indiana plans to end its participation in all federally funded pandemic unemployment insurance programs next month.www.wlky.com
That's not all. Indiana will drop out of the following federal programs:
- Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC), which provides a $300 weekly add-on to recipients of unemployment insurance
- Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC), which provides recipients extended benefits after their traditional 26 weeks of unemployment insurance benefits have been exhausted
- Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), which provides benefits to individuals who do not normally qualify for unemployment benefits, such as self-employed, gig workers, and independent contractors
- Mixed Earner Unemployment Compensation (MEUC), which provides a $100 additional weekly benefit for individuals who are eligible for regular unemployment benefits but also earned at least $5,000 in self-employment income
Party's over folks.
speaking from experience, I understand the "Why work 40 hours for $700 when I can sit on my ass for $600? In a slightly similar vein, when it came time for us to have kids, we looked at what it would cost for Mrs Monkey to go back to work, and the takehome pay after daycare, etc would have been minimal. So we cut corners and did without stuff we didnt NEED and did just fine.yay! for the most part.
i do understand that some people really need the extras but i know a lot of people personally that refuse to even look for a job.
i've been saying from the beginning of this mess that instead of just giving everybody all that "free" money, they should have looked at it on a case by case basis. i know of people that actually quit their job just to get the extras. they fired about 200 people when the employer figured it out. and they were repprted to the state and now have to pay that money back with interest.
i feel that they should have given people what they would have taken home after taxes. that extra $600 a week made a lot of people stupid.
exactly. i'm a contractor in my building. when they shut the building down the company paid their employees their regular wage & gave them the extra $600. none if it was UI. they said they were helping with childcare expenses.speaking from experience, I understand the "Why work 40 hours for $700 when I can sit on my ass for $600? I'm sure these workers could also do that. You know, like gas/bus tickets, childcare, etc. Dont need to buy those if you arent going anywhere... so that expense is off the table.
Skin in the game also means that those sick employees who infect others can also face the consequences. Sue them.So if one guy on my crew gets COVID and the rest are forced to quarantine ( not able to come to work) should they just starve? Screw them right?

This is so far out of touch it’s not even funny. You think the guy who doesn’t get sick days can sue someone without paying a lawyer thousands of dollars?Skin in the game also means that those sick employees who infect others can also face the consequences. Sue them.
I'll do you one better- "fellow servant doctrine".This is so far out of touch it’s not even funny. You think the guy who doesn’t get sick days can sue someone without paying a lawyer thousands of dollars?
that’s cute

Quoting for posterity....and irony."those sick employees who infect others"
Why would the guy who doesn't get sick sue anyone?
Your reading comprehension is cute.
Something else that should be done away with. The idea that an employer is somehow responsible for the bad actions of an employee and are financially responsible is a terrible idea.I'll do you one better- "fellow servant doctrine".
But hey...worker comp.....maybe.
