They are for shotgun rounds. I would guess maybe breaching rounds? I put a couple Federal paper shells in them when I went shooting yesterday to make me look super tactical awesomer and being paper shells kind of sophisticated at the same time! I just got done oiling my guns up from yesterday and Jeremy is correct the pouch I left mags in yesterday is already easier to use. It must have stretched out some. I wedged a piece of cardboard in between the mags in both pouches to see if that will stretch it out more. Hopefully they will get better. I really like the size and look of them. Mine are made out of some strange supposed "Navy Seal" camo pattern.
