As VUPDblue said it has been done in Europe. The problem is that the suppressor baffles have to get larger as the shot opens up. This makes effective suppression very difficult and generally not worth the effort unless required by law as is the case in some countries.

Most shotgun suppressors are not of the traditional open-bore, baffled style. They're basically a heavily ported barrel extension with a baffled shroud over it. So the barrel continues straight so as to keep the wad and shot in a tightly enclosed until it exits the the suppressor. The reason they're not as effective is the because even a heavily ported barrel extension won't allow the same amount of air out of the "bore area" and into the baffle area as a typically open-bore suppressor.

It's possible to suppress almost anything, if you want to build a big enough can. The bank robbery in "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot" was loosely based on a real-life case that happened in Canada, where the robbers blasted into a bank vault with a suppressed 20mm anti-aircraft cannon. I believe the suppressor was made from a 30 gallon oil drum.

    WTF is that thing?

M109G 155mm self-propelled howitzer with the largest suppressor in the world. used in Germany with the noise restrictions that are in place. They have several different models but they apperantly do reduce a good bit of noise. Interesting folks those Germans.......
