Specialty hatchets?

While cleaning up a relatives estate, my brother ran across this hatchet.

It appears to be a factory design.
What is the intended use for such an oddity blade?

Yeah, I tried looking for pics of something that looked like it and came up empty. Found roofing hatchets but most just had a hammer head on one side and a blade with a notch on the other side.

I collect axe's and have for 15 years or so. this is the first I have seen anything like it. I have seen pilot escape axes, but they are very different. Cool to see something new.

Well there you have it. It's a firefighter crash forestry air crash axe. And if you need to lay some shingles after crashing your plane, it's good for that, too.
