I was running errands today, and as usual, I was also running behind.
I was at Costco, pushing my cart back to the corral, when this older gentleman came up to me.
He was talking fairly fast, and sort of monotone. He flashed some dog tags, and gave me his name and rank.
He caught me off guard, and he was talking fast enough, that it was hard to keep up. Almost like it was a script, or practiced maybe.
He claimed to be from Indy, and was moving back up to the area. He stopped for gas and someone stole his credit card info
and ordered $1100 worth of tv's from Amazon, and they locked his account. CC, bank? He didn't say, that I caught.
He said he needed to get his prescription (gave a name for it) and said it was for seizures. He borrowed $32 from his daughter, and
when he got to Wal-Mart, the price had went up to $40. Said he was trying to raise $8 to get his medicine, and he isn't a bum, then
pointed to a car and said that's my car.
Now, $8 bucks isn't much, but I don't carry cash on me anymore, since this pandemcrap started, so I apologized and let him know I didn't have any cash.
He abruptly said "I'm sorry for bothering you" and walked off.
This all transpired in less than 2 minutes... he talked pretty fast.
Showing dog tags and stating your name and rank, even if it matches the tags, doesn't prove those tags are yours, correct?
Speaking quickly, and monotone seems a little odd to me also.
I've probably left things out, things I probably didn't catch, but does this seem like some sort of a scam?
I feel really bad that I wasn't able to toss him the cash, just in case it was legitimate.
In hindsight, even though I was behind schedule, I could have offered to meet him at Wal-Mart, and pay the $8 at the pharmacy.
I truly hope, that if he was for real, that he was able to get his medication.
This is going bother me now.
Sorry for being long winded, I just keep trying to process it.
