I have a memory foam mattress.. Had it for about six years. It's some off brand I got on the internet. I think it springs back into shape every day, despite the fact that I'm 250 lbs and sleep in the exact same spot every night.

To deal with the "too hot" issue, I put an old cotton blanket over the foam mattress or topper (have had both) before putting the fitted sheet on. Helps it breathe better.

With memory foam, it figures out your number for you and you're stuck with it. It knows what's best for you. Nanny mattress. Libertarians beware!

p.s. Stayed away from the sleep number mattress cause I was bad at math.

You don't have to be good at math or even know what you're doing to be a control freak. :D

Wife and I bought a Thermo-pedic memory foam mattress about a year ago. We love it. The 'Thermo' gel stuff keeps it from being too hot in the summer (still warmer than a 'regular' mattress) but morning backaches and joint aches (yours truly failed to act his age about 14 years ago, Doc cobbled me together but said I'll be back for a new knee before he retires) are essentially gone.

Don't have the mattress, but I do use the Tempur pedic pillow. It's awesome 9 months out of the year, but in cold weather ( I keep my bedroom about 55°) I could use it as a hammer.

    Whatever route you go, OP:

Buy the absolute best you can afford. Seriously. Don't skimp on a mattress.

Of course, I do know that "best" is subjective...
