Sorry man. I'd hate to think about having to put my Corgi down. She is such a sweet girl and really makes me feel like making it another day.

I'm sorry to hear that. As I watch my dogs age, I'm not looking forward to the day I lose one of them. Dogs bring so much joy to our lives.

My dog died last January. It was my first dog. I had her since I was just starting high school. I took it pretty badly. The only thing that really helped was another dog. Anyway before I start gushing like a woman, I thought I would share these poems. Not that they help much. Might even make it worse.

Just read the OP because my very good boy dog Gunny was diagnosed about 6 weeks ago with canine lymphnoma (spelling?). Vet says he will stop eating/drinking when it starts producing pain. So far so good. He's lost weight and has various sores in his coat, but I have been giving him 2 aspirins a day and these seem to have really reduced the swollen lymph glands in his neck and on his hind legs. He still not his old peppy self as he sleeps all the time and is not interested in playing with his sister Abby. I can tell she knows something is wrong and now generally ignores him. I am not looking forward at all to the coming day when he exhibits pain and it will be time to go. Gunny Gibbs and sis Abby Schuto are not even 3 years old yet. If he was an old dog I guess I wouldn't feel so bad about this unfair deal.

Some people don't understand how close your dog or dogs can get to you. Losing one tears at your heart almost like losing a child or other loved one.

rightwinger, I hope the following helps some....

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to
someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends
so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food,
water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health
and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and
strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days
    and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing,
they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left
    behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one
suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes
are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run
from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying
    him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend
finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be
parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face, your hands
again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the
trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never
    absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
