He was a moderate Republican and will always be hated for it. Politics is broken.
Dick Lugar was not a statesman. He was a spineless politician who bent with the wind, very much in the mold of John McCain.
I wish no ill will on him or his family but I’m not going to pretend he was something he was not.

Politics aside I give him respect for being a Veteran and a Hoosier. Rest in peace.
Honestly, I don't really give a **** what anyone around here thinks about it, so RIP, Senator Lugar.
This is more generous than I would be. The last time I encountered that little mother*cker in person ...
Well I personally worked with the man and his staff to help 3 veteran friends of mine and he helped me too. Ill be forever grateful to him for that and his service as a public servant. I have never agreed with any politician 100% of the time on every issue ever.
To compare Senator Lugar to john mccain (who I grew to despise), is a mischaracterization. I can't dispute anyones personal interactions with the man, those are yours alone and your perception is your reality. But on the politics, he was a statesman and im proud to have briefly known the man looking back.
Im sure there were. Also a lot that felt betrayed by mccain. If you consider your situation with Sen. Lugar, you may also realize that Sen. McCain probably had a myriad of veterans and non-veterans alike who loved him because he helped them.
RIP, Sen. Lugar. His retirement from the US Senate was long overdue and I still harbor resentment for some of his bad decisions, but he will be missed by many whose lives he touched. He also worked hard and was never a dick in public (to my knowledge), which are becoming increasingly rare among his former peers.
Much can be learned by our two Indiana guys in the Senate from Sen. Lugar's career. I hope they were paying attention to both the good and the bad and learn from both his successes and his mistakes.
